Rajamudi Rice (Raw) – Heritage Mysore Red Rice
Slender, reddish-brown and softly aromatic, Rajamudi cooks to a tender grain with a gentle, nutty sweetness that hybrid white rice simply cannot copy. This is the heritage red rice once reserved for the Mysore Wodeyars — grown today by a handful of Karnataka farmers.

Description
There is a reason the Wodeyar kings of Mysore reserved Rajamudi for their own table. The name itself says it — Raja, king, and Mudi, crown — a heritage variety grown for royalty long before it ever reached an ordinary kitchen. Native to the Hassan and Mysuru belt of Karnataka, Rajamudi is now grown on only a few thousand acres, kept alive by a handful of farmers who refuse to let it disappear. We grow it the way it has always been grown — in living soil, without synthetic chemicals — so every grain that reaches you carries a genuine piece of Karnataka’s own history.
In your kitchen
Because it keeps its natural red bran, it holds more fibre and a kinder, low-to-medium glycemic character. Cook it 1:2.5 with water for everyday meals, or let it carry a fragrant biryani or pulao. A drizzle of our Malnad Gidda ghee over a hot plate is the simplest way to taste why kings kept it close.
How to cook it
- Rinse well and soak 20–30 minutes for a softer grain.
- Cook 1 cup rice to 2.5 cups water (open pot or 3 whistles in a cooker).
- Expect a tender, slightly nutty grain — softer than brown rice, fuller than white.
- Serve with sambar or dal, and finish with a spoon of ghee to bring out the aroma.
Why you’ll love it
- Chemical-Free – Grown and processed without synthetic pesticides or chemicals
- High in Fibre – Dietary fibre that supports healthy digestion and keeps you fuller
- Low GI – A low-glycemic choice that fits a blood-sugar-conscious plate
- Iron-Rich – Contains iron, which supports energy and everyday vitality
Frequently asked questions
How is Rajamudi different from ordinary red rice?
Rajamudi is a single heirloom variety from the Hassan–Mysuru belt, not a blend. It cooks softer than generic red rice, has a gentle natural aroma, and keeps its red bran — which gives it more fibre and a low-to-medium glycemic character.
Will my family accept it if we currently eat white rice?
Most families do. It’s noticeably softer than brown rice, and soaking 30 minutes makes it gentler still. Many customers start by mixing it 50:50 with their usual rice for the first few weeks.
Storage
Store in an airtight container in a cool, dry place, away from moisture and direct sunlight. Best used within 6 months of packing.
